Hi everybody,

The Firefox Desktop team is plowing through a pile of work trying to make
Firefox 57 stunning, slick and snappy. Here's what we've been up to lately!

Big thanks to johannh who put these notes together with me.
Highlights

   -

The App Updater is now using LZMA compression and SHA384 for signing.
The release of builds taking advantage of this should be unthrottled today.
So far, complete update files are reduced from 19-21%.
   -

   Three new Test Pilot experiments
   <https://testpilot.firefox.com/experiments> launched today!
   -

      Voice Fill <https://testpilot.firefox.com/experiments/voice-fill>
allows you to do web searches with your voice and your microphone!
      -

      Notes <https://testpilot.firefox.com/experiments/notes> gives you a
      notepad in your sidebar!
      -

      Send <https://testpilot.firefox.com/experiments/send> allows you to
share file upload links that automatically self-destruct after the first
      download!
      -

The file size is shown again
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1354568> for completed
   downloads in the downloads panel
   -

Titlebar vibrancy (translucency effect) on Mac OS
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1377284> has just landed
(ignore the square tabs - that hasn’t landed yet)

Photon

We’re very close (and on track!) to our feature-complete target date of
August 7th. There are still a few key things incoming, but we are starting
to shift towards bug-fixing and polish instead of adding whole new features.
Performance

   -

A patch to switch the tab strip to using CSS smooth-scroll
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1356705> (and eliminating
some sync reflows in the process), has been reviewed and is waiting for the
   merge before landing on central.
   -

There are now some basic reflow tests
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1356271> for showing
   results in the AwesomeBar
   -

A patch to switch to the next tab earlier
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1355426> when removing a
tab is waiting for review, and should shave a few milliseconds off of tab
   switch time.
   -

mconley is starting to work on a patch to “warm up” tabs speculatively
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1385453> when we think
we’re going to switch to them.
   -

Perry is working on removing the context menu CPOWs
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1360406> and making the
   thumbnailer less aggressive

   -

Mike updated the history portion of the library button
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1354533> to declutter it
   and show more history items.
   -

The overflow panel is now much prettier
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1354086>!

Animation

   -

   The Save to Pocket <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1355922>
   and the Bookmark <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1352063>
animation landed. Reminder that you do not need to sign up for an account
to use Pocket, just click through the tutorial and it will start letting
   you save pages to Pocket.
   -

Further refinements on the toolbar button animations [1]
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1381957> [2]
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1380815>
   -

   New arrow-panel animations
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1352075> are up for
review, looks like all test failures are now fixed.
   -

   The new Download notifications animation
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1352065> got r+ and should
   land after the merge
   -

   The new tab loading/progress indicator
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1352119> is going through
   review passes

Visuals

   accent color text <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1379266>,

Onboarding

   -

Going through P3 bugs for the 56 release and working on them.

to make them high priority P3s. Will uplift to beta as they
being completed.
      -

Copy for the 57 release has been confirmed - we’re just waiting for
illustrations. WIP patches ready to be have the illustrations put into them.

Preferences

   -

Performance section on Preferences was found to have confusing behavior
because of how e10s rollout changes user default. Bug 1382649
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1382649> landed and was
uplifted to beta last week to deal with it.
   -

Preferences Re-org and Search received signed-off w/ YELLOWs. Work to
address the remaining issues started last week. Most of them are addressed
   before Aug 2.
   -

      The new organization with search
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1381953> has been

      -

   review by Aug 7.

   -

Holding off a couple of days to land site permission management in
   preferences <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1275599> in a new
   dialog <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1373206> in 57,

Containers to run as a WebExtension

Search and Navigation <https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Search>

   -

   Location Bar:
   -

The popup doesn’t show a scrollbar anymore, instead it just adapts
      itself to the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults pref
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1264988> value
      -

Pref-based Shield studies will now be able to define a different

      -

   Jank-free Bookmarking:

      -

Fixed a regression in the Bookmark All Tabs dialog
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1383138>
      -

Currently investigating API optimizations when acting on hundreds of
      bookmarks at once
      -

   Downloads
   -

Downloads history integration code is being
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1381411> refactored
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=830415> to share it
more easily with Photon downloads views
      -

   Misc:
   -

The Places connection shutdown now uses an Async Shutdown Blocker
      instead of a custom notification
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1275878>. This allows
to simplify the History expiration code, that should soon move to
      idleDispatch.
      -

      Fixed <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1382444> some
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1382444> frequent
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1336806> intermittent
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1382291> failures
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1382474>, leaks
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1376676>, tests missing
      from the manifests
      <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1383639> and useless
      tests <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1347427>

Sync / Firefox Accounts

   -

   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1385179> is coming in 56.
Landed, but pref’d off for now.
   -

Bidirectional bookmark sync is coming to iOS! Please follow the meta bug
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1380056> if you’re
   interested.
   -

The history engine now uses Sqlite.jsm to query Places
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1336518>, and
   PlacesUtils.history.insertMany
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1377944>, instead of
hand-rolled wrappers that spin the event loop. Thanks to contributors
   Santiago Paez and Luciano Italiani!
   -

Bookmark validation is now enabled through early betas
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1385127>. Please report
any perf regressions you see when syncing bookmarks.
   -

Edouard made Sync UI startup lazier

with a small percentage of people and roll out the feature over a few weeks.

[mconley] For-looping in hot, performance critical code paths? Don’t use
   forEach <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1383362>. Even
for-of is slower than for-in or a C-style for loop
   <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1379900#c11>.
   -

Don’t use for-in to iterate over arrays, though.

[bgrins] `./mach run` and prefs for the scratch_user
   -

Default browser prompt and about:config warning are hidden by default
      -

Set arbitrary prefs, like: ./mach run --setpref
      browser.startup.homepage="about:preferences"

   [standard8] MozillaBuild 3.0 is out
   <https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/firefox-dev/2017-July/005630.html>!
(thanks to RyanVM). Includes built-in node support for ESLint
   -

[mconley] Stylo is being built by default now
   <https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/firefox-dev/2017-July/005662.html>,
so if you’re wondering why your non-artifact builds have slowed way down,
that’s because ccache doesn’t support Rust. Consider switching to sccache
   <https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/mozilla.dev.platform/5srcnP-Wj4E/Uf_2gw2NAAAJ>
(if you’re on OS X, you may have to workaround this bug
   <https://github.com/mozilla/sccache/issues/163> by running xcode-select
--install.If that doesn’t work, consider asking the folks in
#developers). One bonus is that sccache, unlike ccache, works on Windows!
   -

You can disable building Stylo locally with: ac_add_options
      --disable-stylo in your mozconfig

      -

Just in case anyone isn’t aware, 3-5 people on our team are
working on QF and/or Photon Perf bugs as well, trying to pinch hit on
         Runtime or DOM bugs.
         -

Namely, those people are Adam Gashlin (agashlin), Kirk Steuber
(bytesized), Perry Jiang (perry), and Felipe Gomes (felipe) -- and
sometimes Robert Strong (rstrong). Please help them if they
reach out with
         questions.

Kris Maglione has landed patches that allow you to queue work to occur
just after layout and style flushes have occurred! Consider using them
   to avoid sync flushes.

Also note that I'm really just synthesizing and humanizing the stuff that's
on the Wiki, which is freely available from here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Meeting, so check that out if you want the
source material. It'll also be posted (minus the Below the Fold stuff) to
the Nightly blog.

Finally, if there's a Firefox-ish team that you feel isn't being
represented here, please let them know about the above meeting so we can
get their updates.

Keep on rockin' the free web,
